I watched this episode again recently, here are some observations that came to mind: 1. Jayne Modean - She's a nice girl, and definately closer in age to Jesse than her replacement, Jeanie Wilson. Her acting isn't bad (with the glaring exception of the barn scene, she looked outright stupid there when she says "I can't believe I just hit a man!") but Jeanie is definately better at being Jesse's sarcastic foil. 2. Firepower/Gadjets - It makes me wonder how exciting the show would have been without the machine guns and rockets. I guess they thought we'd be satisfied with big jumps, laser beams, and hyperthrust (and a rubber slug?). 3. Nerdy Guy - I really noticed the nerdy guy in the argyle sweater that made a couple appearances in this episode. His role is basically to stand there and stare at Jayne Modean with a blank look on his face. I'm glad they didn't make him a recurring character. 4. "What a guy!" - This seemed to be Jesse's catch phrase throughout the episode. I'm going to re-watch the other episodes and see if that is a prevalent line for him later on. 5. Anthony Corrido/Christopher Lloyd - "Doc" plays a pretty decent bad guy overall. His character is a pretty blind driver. Jesse basically dupes him twice as he's following him, once when he rams through the billboard and a second time when he goes plummeting into the San Andreas gorge. "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!" 6. "She couldn't take the heat" - Corrido makes this comment as he comes up out of the pool. I'm assuming he's referring to the girl lying in the beach chair, but after rewinding it just looks like she's sunbathing. I guess she's supposed to be dead or something? 7. That's where I live!!! - When Jesse is chasing the motorcycles, Norman tells him they are nearing Imperial Hwy. I live in the Los Angeles area; my house is about 1 mile from Imperial Hwy and the office I work at is actually on Imperial Hwy.

They did seem to try to make "What a guy!" a catch phrase. One other episode I remember it in is "Hot Target" at the awards banquet for the Commander. I always thought it was pretty lame.

Catchphrases did seem very popular didn't they. I mean, almost in every succesful show somone had a catchphrase...
The Fonz, Lone Ranger, Columbo, Mr T, Gary Coleman, Homer Simpson, Bart Simpson. The Waltons, Cannon & Ball, The Two Ronnies, Golden Girls ...
Actually, now there are tons that I can think of! I think they are okay, if not over used otherwise it just sounds kitschy. Definately Jesse shouldn't have relied upon it, maybe twice in 13 episodes is enough. Then again, it could just be something which Rex liked to say and added in himself to give his character a quirk. That's one maybe to ask Burton. I was debating whether to ask him a few more questions, post interview. If I can get some which are good enough I may email him again.

Japanese Pilot Video Laser Disc

Street Hawk made it to Laser Disk? Wow! You know, that's kind of ironic, if you think about it. Street Hawk and Laser Disk had about the same fate overall.
What's up with the blue particle beam on the back picture? Maybe this is acutally the very first Blu-Ray disk. Ha ha.

Indeedy. It suprised me too. Not even Knight Rider or Airwolf (to my knowledge) made it to LD.
Don't you know about the blue particle beam ray?
In the EC/Canadian pilot version Street Hawk had a blue electrical ray. In the US version it was a red laser which then continued through the tv series. Why the difference? I don't know. Perhaps the blue ray was an early attempt and then once the pilot was picked up for syndication they found the SFX wasn't available and changed it to the more familiar red laser.
Really, I liked the electrical tazer ray. It had the same neon blue glow as the front light bar, like the two might be inter-related???
The red laser is a simpler (cheaper) effect as well as also being a more accurate/and cleaner weapon. Thinking about it, had they kept with the tazer it could be a good way of immobilising criminals on foot. Just adjust the charge accordingly. Funny, we were just recently talking about having some kind of stun gun weren't we?
Oh, there is a missing scene at Police HQ and added hyperthrust "light trail" SFX in the European version.

Also, there is a missing scene between Jesse and Sandy, a cut scene in the car park where jesse is almost run over again, an extended version of the scene in the underground car park where jesse is attacked by the bike rider (Jesse whacks him over the head with his walking stick!). Can't think of anymore.
Although there are some awful superimposed fx in the european cut which were traded in the US versions for more satisfying hidden ramp jumps.
These are just after Street Hawk frazzles the two robbers in the car. When Street Hawk jumps over the cop car to escape, they used a truly crap superimposed effect of the bike going over the car.
The other is when Street Hawk chases the two yellow bikers the first time. The bit where he uses V-Lift to jump onto a balcony, they use the same crap superimposed effect.
I think the backflip at the end of the pilot uses the superimposed effect but is much further away and cut much quicker so it doesn't look so bad.

Yes, the escape scene at the Kwik-e-Mart place was pretty badly put together actually. You just reminded me of it. The bike leaps over the cop car and goes into hyperthrust instantly with a OTT light trail effect. I also think they used that superimposed effect in A Second Self when the bike jumped from the higher ledge in the Storm Drains. It was either an effect or they used the crane again, but I can't see why they'd do that. Well, Ducati thinks the backflip scene was done with models. It's interesting that you, like me, also think it was an effect. What do others think?

I really like the ott tail light effect. Just so 80's! Ooh...bright lights!

I just noticed too that the top/right photo on the back of the laser disk doesn't appear to be a shot I am familiar with in the U.S. version of the film. Maybe this is from one of the cut scenes you were referring to?
As far as how they did the backflip scene, it looked to me like they did use some sort of model for the brief moment we see Jesse doing the backflip. But it was so quick and not that great quality of a shot, so it could have been either.

I just noticed too that the top/right photo on the back of the laser disk doesn't appear to be a shot I am familiar with in the U.S. version of the film. Yes, it is from the EC version, from the scene where he is chasing Bill & Ben, the yellow biker men. It is much better done in the US version where you don't see the take off, you just see the bike in the air and land. As you can see from the photo the bike kind of lifts up unnaturally, rather like it is being beamed up or lifted by the hand of God or something! LMAO The same effect is done earlier when he is taking on the hoodlums at the store. "No charge for the tune up!"

Well, I'd still love to get myself a copy of the Canadian/European version with these minor variations. Does Josh have a download of this version, or just the U.S. version?

Oh, not to derail everything, but way back on my original post for this thread I asked about Corrido's line "She couldn't take the heat." Anybody have a clue what he meant right there?

Sunstroke I guess, but possibly drug related.
