OK so you guys seem pretty up on your 80s trivia/memorabilia. 20 months ago, I got a "what ever happened to" wild hair and started googling my teen wet dream, Marjoe Gortner.
Back then, I knew NOTHING about him - it was not the information age. People were just on TV cuz they WERE. You didn't question WHY really. Some people were just on game shows as "celebs" and you accepted it.
All I knew about the dynamic Marjoe was he was freakishly tall, a natural dark curly blond, a grin full of piano keys, and made my little adolescent girly body feel very strange and embarassed. And pretty much any time you turned on the tube (we only had 3 channels then) you could spot the lovely, outspoken, sarcastic Marjoe.
And he didn't cross my mind for the next 3 decades.
So imagine my surprise when google turns up all the scandal about his controversial childhood (news like that would have gone over my 12 yr old head) and the subsequent notorious documentary that followed. So THAT'S what all the fuss was about. And simple little me just thought he was SEXXXXAAAAAY.
What is missing on the net, however, is the vast bulk of Marjoe's 70s/80s acting career. You get a TON of the child evangelist stuff, but NO good pics of the era when Marjoe was voted "Playboy's sexiest people" 3 yrs in a row.
So it became a late night insomniacs scavenger hunt. Where have these images and shows vanished to? And the more I dug up about Marjoe, the more I liked him. If you watch the full documentary, your heart goes out, and reading his autobiography (from 1973) you see into his deep intellect. But what about the TV & movies? the stuff that first attracted me?
Suddenly I was back in my teens, tracing news about a hero. A very weird feeling when you are pushing 50. I also found there are LOTs of people wondering where Marjoe has disappeared to. So I found him, spoke briefly to him, and have made friends w/ many of his employees and cronies.
Today Mr. G bills himself as :
World's Youngest Child Evangelist
The Holy Hustler
Charity Event Organizer
Auctioneer Extraordinaire
What's missing from this list?
What about Actor, Musician, Singer, Performer, SEX SYMBOL?
Today, Marjoe totally DENIES his acting career, while he seems to have come to terms with the wierd childhood, and owns it. Even HIS OWN EMPLOYEES, people who have worked for him for 10 yrs more or less, have no idea he ever did any films other than the documentary of his life which preceeded any acting jobs (unless you count bogus faith healing as acting). Denying this high profile part of his life is like making me deny my first ever "grown up woman" feelings!
So my goal, after hanging out with him and his peeps on 2 occaisions, is to collect every bit of filming my Hero ever did. He has endured "world's worst actor" from the public, and even from his own buddies, for decades now, to the pt where he just has decided it was a wasted part of his life that never should be mentioned again. I've found a few movies that show otherwise. I work for one of the world's biggest Shakespeare companies, I know a bad actor when I see one. I also know how to differentiate between a bad actor and a bad script, bad editing, bad special effects. I also can recognize a good actor who is just phoning it in.
Today Mr G surrounds himself with A-List actors, many of which have a few bits of celluloid out there that stink worse than anything Marjoe ever was involved in. Yet they don't deny that they are "actors". These same "stars" like to call MG "world's worst" and admit they have "never actually seen anything he did". They treat him like a lackey and he doesn't deserve it.
SO
here's where I ask you guys for any old tapes from the old days. VHS is fine, or even posted clips I can capture. I've exhausted Youtube.
